PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police have released new details as they investigate a deadly shooting Thursday night involving an off-duty officer in Northeast Philadelphia.

Officials say it was around 11:30 when the off-duty detective, in his personal vehicle, and another driver stopped at Willits Road and Holme Avenue, not far from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

According to investigators, the other driver, a 54-year-old man, got out of his car and approached the detective's car. They say that’s when the 14-year police veteran fired several times at the man. The other driver was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

As per department policy, the detective has not yet been interviewed by investigators, but will likely be questioned this weekend, 72 hours after the incident. He will also be placed on administrative duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.

In addition to the department’s Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Unit, Internal Affairs the District Attorney’s Office are also carrying out their own separate probes into the incident.
