Parking a non-EV in an EV-designated spot could soon cost you

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Parking a non-electric vehicle in a spot reserved for an electric vehicle could carry a hefty fine under a bill moving in the Pennsylvania House.

“If you're not an EV, if you're not charging, you shouldn't be in the spot,” said Montgomery County Democratic state representative Joe Cerisi.

Fines would range from $50-$200. Under the legislation, charging spots would need to be marked with signs. Cars could only be towed if the sign had a clear warning about towing.

“The demand for electric vehicles continues to grow. Although Pennsylvania is working to install more vehicle charges, they are limited,” said House Transportation Committee Chairman Ed Nielsen. “So when someone parks in that spot and has a vehicle that needs to be charged, we need to make sure there's room for them if we can.”

The bill moved out of the State House Transportation Committee with bipartisan support, 22-to-3. It moves to the full House for consideration, but with only a handful of days left in this session, it’s not clear if there will be time for the House and Senate to take it up.
