With Latest, New Donation, Billionaire Ken Griffin Has Donated 100s Of Millions To Florida Causes

    2024-04-19

Over the past couple of years, Florida has welcomed some new billionaire residents including Daniel Och, Carl Icahn, Josh Harris, and Jeff Bezos, to name just a few examples.

One advantage to these new residents is that some of them have donated to Florida institutions and organizations.

For example, one billionaire has donated $300 million to Florida causes since he moved his business to the Sunshine State in 2022.

Ken Griffin's Move To Florida: Founder of the hedge fund Citadel, Griffin's net worth is approximately $37 billion, per Bloomberg.

Prior to late 2022, Citadel had its offices in Chicago. However, in November of 2022, Griffin decided to relocate Citadel to the Miami area. And although some might have expected Griffin to discuss the tax benefits of the move, instead he talked about "values."

    He has said, in part:

"...There’s something very special about the government in Florida and their focus on delivering traditional values for the community..."

That emphasis on community could have contributed to Griffin wanting to better his own Florida community - because at this time, he has donated $300 million dollars to organizations in Florida.

Previous Florida Donations: This will not be an exhaustive list, but here are the types of donations that Griffin has made in Florida:

Education: Very recently, Griffin donated Griffin donated $9 million to Miami-Dade County Public Schools for middle school tutoring programs. It wasn't the first education-focused donation, either. He's previously donated $20 million to Miami Dade College. An additional educational donation was $8 million to the Cox Science Center and Aquarium.

Medical: Some of Griffin's donations were focused on medical establishments. He has donated $50 million toward cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and $50 million to the Baptist Health Foundation.

The Park Donation: In late April of 2024, Griffin donated $7 million toward Palm Beach's project to update Phipps Ocean Park.

According to the South Florida Business Journal, Griffin has donated $300 million in Florida since relocating Citadel to Miami in 2022.
