Gym Chain New York Sports Club Is Closing All Its Florida Locations And Laying Off More Than 100

    2024-07-18

A gym can be a great place to step up your workout game. After all, if you make the effort to pay for a gym membership and travel to the gym, the chances are good that you'll actually work out and improve your health. That said, the pandemic taught some people that, with a bit of creativity and determination, they can get a great workout at home. Therefore, some gyms in the Sunshine State have had difficulties. I've written about a Retro Fitness franchisee's bankruptcy and auction in South Florida. And now, gym chain New York Sports Club is shuttering its Florida locations and laying off its employees.

About New York Sports Club: This club has been serving its communities for over 50 years. The company strives to offer full-service gyms to meet all of its member's fitness needs. In addition to personal training, it offers classes like the barbell club, group fitness, cycling, recovery, performance, and fitness fundamentals.

The club initially originated in New York, but it currently has three locations in Florida - which will close in months.

The Cypress Parkway Fort Myers location earns 1.3 out of 5 stars on Yelp. Some reviewers say that some of the equipment is broken or old. A reviewer named Nicholas writes that the local YMCA has more updated equipment.

The Florida Closures And Layoffs: According to a warn letter dated July 1, 2024, the gym will close its three Florida locations - all in Lee County - including two locations in Fort Myers and one in Cape Coral in late August of 2024. As a result, 108 employees will be laid off. Employees in question have job titles such as instructors, trainers, managers, and supervisors. The employees do not have bumping rights, nor are they represented by a union.

The Fort Myers locations have reportedly been sold to Crunch Fitness.
