Today's retail landscape is littered with chain stores that sell mass-produced items. That's why it is arguably special to find independently owned general stores in Florida's rural cities that sell handmade goodies made with love. Examples are Amish Country Store and Richoloam General Store, to name a couple of examples. And Micanopy's Mosswood Bake House is a good alternative for those who want local, scratch-made baked goods in a general store.

About Mosswood Bake House: This store was established in 2007 in the small town of Micanopy. It initially aimed to offer locally produced handmade items like baskets, soaps, jellies, honey, pickles, and heirloom vegetable seeds.

Eventually, the farmhouse store with a front porch added a coffee bar and bakery. They offer retro baked goods with a modern twist and they have a particular passion for cakes.

This is a family-operated business with a husband and wife team, along with a sibling. The store sits on an acre and a half surrounded by banana trees, a nursery, and gardens.

Micanopy patrons and visitors give Mosswood 4.6 out of 5 stars. Many rave about the coffee, friendly service, sweet and savory treats, and homegrown fruits.

    A reviewer named Sara writes:

"Great little shop of treats! A must-visit in Micanopy. Passionate owners make an array of treats, sweet and savory, on-site and they also have a variety of seasonal fruit which is harvested directly from the trees on the property."
