Popular Florida Hibachi Buffet, Koy Wan, Shut Down After State Inspection

When you want to eat a varied meal outside of your home and to be entertained at the same time, a hibachi can be a good choice because the chefs are often extremely talented and sometimes humorous. Great options for hibachi in Florida are Amura's and Maki Hibachi, as a few examples. Unfortunately, one restaurant in this genre, Altamonte Spring's Koy Wan Habachi Buffet, was recently temporarily shut down after a state inspection.

About Koy Wan Hibachi Buffet: This buffet includes grilled foods, sushi, and Pan-American dishes in a generous buffet setting. It has been reviewed over 2,800 times by patrons and visitors and earns 3.9 out of 5 stars on Google reviews. Patrons recount a lunch buffet for $12, which some considered fair for the quality and quantity of food. A few patrons mentioned cleanliness. A reviewer named Maggie wrote, in part:

"Paid $12.83 with tax lunch buffet on a Wednesday afternoon. First of all, I noticed was the place is kind of old and outdated. It had this old smell that made me lose my appetite as soon as I entered. It seriously needs renovation - especially the toilets. Regarding the food, nothing special, just average. There are plenty of choices...There is also a hibachi section but I didn’t try it. Service is good, staffs are friendly. Overall, for the price and quality of food maybe (I) can consider dining here again in the future."

What Happened At Inspection?: According to data from a database maintained by the publication The Tallahassee Democrat, an inspection occurred on July 23, 2024. At that time, 11 violations were noted.

Examples of basic violations were the floor being covered with standing water, and the walk-in cooler being soiled with debris and having rust.

An intermediate violation came for there being no soap in the handwash sink.

High-priority violations came from flying insects at various places in the restaurant - on pastries and cupcakes on the buffet line and on the soda dispenser in the wait station. Another violation came from the observation of a live roach on a sticky trap under a freezer. A stop sale order came because sushi did not have a time mark.

As a result of some of the above violations, the restaurant at 945 W SR 436 was temporarily shut down. A follow-up inspection on July 24, 2024, had 6 violations, but none were considered an immediate threat to the public so the restaurant was free to reopen.

Please note that an inspection is one moment in time and not necessarily indicative of how a restaurant conducts itself every.
