There are watering holes in Florida that are somewhat legendary. Examples are Lee & Rick's Oyster Bar and No Name Pub. But one tavern that has been called "iconic," Miami's Duffy's Tavern, has been sold for $4.5 million. Although its eventual future may not be certain, it's reportedly not going anywhere immediately.

About Duffy's Tavern: This Irish bar has been in business since 1955, and its decor reflects this. When the Miami Herald reported that the bar was for sale in May of 2024, the publication called it "a museum of Miami." Miami New Times has called the tavern "iconic."

Miami patrons and visitors give the tavern 4.3 out of 5 stars on Google reviews. Many mention the enjoyable, old-school vibe. A reviewer named Barrett wrote:

"Absolutely one of the best bars in the world! Great atmosphere and old school bar feeling. Incredible food!!! The cheeseburger was so amazing I’m going to be a regular! Old-school Miami vibe and feel."

The Reported Immediate Future and The Uncertain Distant Future Of Duffy's: The 30,000-square-foot property (including a 3,000-square-foot automotive building next door) recently sold for $4.5 million.

Duffy's co-owner Wayne Russell told the South Florida Business Journal that he (and the new owners) expect to continue running the bar for another six months to a year. However, he said that there are challenges to running a restaurant today, explaining:

"It's not easy to make money doing this anymore. We now have to charge $12 for a burger. When I started here we charged $1.25. What happened?"

On a Facebook post, the eatery reassured the public, in part, "the business itself remains open and fully operational for the foreseeable future."

However, according to The Miami Herald, the area is zoned for workplace housing, which made some patrons nervous. According to The Real Deal, Kerdyk Real Estate, who brokered the deal, indicated that the buyers are reportedly researching eventual redevelopment options, including the possibility of a mixed-use project.
