A Florida Harvey's Will Reportedly Begin The Conversation To A Downsized Aldi

    2024-08-09

Floridians have begun to see the conversion of some Winn Dixie stores to Aldi. This is due to Aldi's purchase of 400 Winn Dixie and Harvey's stores in the fall of 2023. I've reported on stores in Panama City, Panama City Beach, Lakeland, and Tampa that will be converting. With so many Winn Dixies in the news, it's easy to forget about Harvey's. But a Florida Harvey's store - in Jacksonville - is reportedly set to begin the conversion process.

About The Harvey's In Question: This store at 2261 Edgewood Avenue has been reviewed a whopping 2,116 times and earns 4.4 out of 5 on Googe reviews. Some compared the store to a Winn Dixie. Although some mentioned negative customer service issues, others had nice things to say about the same. A reviewer named Bill wrote:

"This store is clean, and the staff goes out of their way to help customers. Unlike other big names like WalMart, this store actually has staff that genuinely care. Harvey's has great prices, (a) good selection, and all the extras like deli and sundry that the big names have; they just do it from their own inner goodness and exceptional work ethic. It is almost like traveling back in time to a different and better era when I shop here."

The Conversion And Downsizing: According to Jax Daily Record, the Harvey's store in question is 46,189 square feet. However, the proposed $1.7 million Aldi project is for 21,839 square feet.

Because Aldi has smaller meat, produce, and bakery sections rather than larger departments, the Aldi stores typically have a smaller footprint than Harvey's and Winn Dixie.

Meredith Hurley, Southeastern Grocers' senior director of communications and community, told the Record that there is a goal of making the transition as easy as possible for Harvey's employees, explaining that the grocer would work with Aldi to:

"... provide support and opportunities to each associate at converting stores, including having the first opportunity to apply to roles at newly converted ALDI stores or remain with Harveys Supermarket and transfer to a neighboring store.”
