Marine Max, PetMeds Top Recent List Of The Best FL Retailers To Work For In Florida

I suspect that if I asked a roomful of Floridians to name the best retailer to work for in Florida, many would say Publix. Why? Because Publix is regularly on "best" employer lists in publications like Fortune and Forbes. However, Florida's PetMeds and Marine Max actually topped retail categories in a recent "best" employer list, whereas Publix was actually nowhere to be found.

About The List And What It Measured: U.S. News + World Report recently published a list of the 2024 best companies to work for in the nation. To come up with the winners, the publication looked at factors such as pay, benefits, work/life balance, job stability, psychological comfort, and professional development.

The Winners in Retail Categories: The list had two categories that would fall under retail - "best in retail," and "best in personal care, drugs, and grocery stores." Neither of the winners in either category was Publix.

Rather, the Florida company that was named the best in retail was Marine Max and the company named the best in personal care, drugs, and grocery stores was PetMeds.

Marine Max was founded in 1998 and is small, employing fewer than 4,000 employees. Employees on Indeed give the employer 3.4 out of 5 stars. Some say it is a fun place to work, but others say training is lacking and management plays "favorites."

PetMeds was founded in 1996. It is also a small company with 287 employees which allows patrons to order items for their pets online. Employees who review PetMeds on Indeed give it 3.8 out of 5 stars. Some said it was a nice place to work with coworkers who felt like "family."

Other Florida-based companies that made the list with which Floridians may be familiar were Carnival, Darden, Spirit Airlines, and Travel + Leisure, as a few examples.
