FL Eatery Known For Its Wings & Waitresses, WingHouse Bar + Grill, Shut Down After State Inspection

I think that even the most prideful Floridian would concede that New York (particularly Buffalo) is the state most known for its chicken wings. But that doesn't mean that Florida doesn't have some chains that specialize in the dish. One example is Florida-based WingHouse. Unfortunately, one location of this chain, in Largo, was recently temporarily shut down after a state inspection.

About WingHouse In Florida: This chain got its start in Florida 30 years ago, and there are currently 19 Florida locations. As the name implies, the restaurant specializes in (and prides itself) on its wings, but you can also get burgers, wraps, fajitas, and pizzas. The waitresses' garb may mean that some patrons pay as much attention to the servers as the wings.

The location in question, at 7369 Ulmerton Road, has been reviewed over 2,600 times by patrons and earns 4.1 out of 5 stars on Google reviews. Recent reviews were quite mixed, as some complained about service and others complained about food. A reviewer named Karen commented about cleanliness, writing:

"Service was great. However, the entire order was subpar, excluding the beer. Boneless wings were tiny. Curly fries were overcooked. Fried pickles were greasy. Roach (was) crawling up the wall. I haven't been to Winghouse in years. This is not how I remember it. Disappointing."

What Happened At Inspection?: According to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Development, an inspection occurred on August 14, 2024. At that time, 18 violations were noted.

Basic violations came because of standing water on the ground and wood buckling from excess moisture, the ceiling leaking into the floor due to a crack in the ceiling, food debris in the microwave, and a soiled wiping cloth being used.

Intermediate violations were lodged due to there being no soap or paper towels at the handwashing sink.

Examples of high-priority violations were due to the observation of live flying insects, foods like raw hamburgers, shredded cheese, and raw chicken wings being held at over 41 degrees, and hot foods like cooked chicken wings not being held at the proper temperature.

As a result of some of the above violations, the restaurant was temporarily shut down.

A follow-up inspection on August 15, 2024 yielded 10 violations, but none were considered an immediate threat to the public so the restaurant could reopen. Another follow-up on August 16th had two violations and at that time, the restaurant "met inspection standards."

Please note that an inspection is one moment in time and not necessarily how a restaurant conducts itself every day.
