A Florida Macy's Store Sells For $15 Million To Mall Owner, Over 1,600 Apartments Possible

If I were to tell you that the future of a Macy's store in Florida's Boynton Beach may be in doubt, I doubt that you would be shocked. In 2022, Macy's closed a number of stores, with one being a Florida store.

However, the Macy's in question was sold to a mall owner and the future of it is not certain as the mall in question could become apartments.

About The Macy's In Question: The 224,396-square-foot Macy's located at 801 North Congress Avenue recently sold for $15 million or $67 per square foot to a company representing the Boynton Beach Mall.

The Macy's in question is currently open and has been reviewed over 1,800 times on Google reviews, where it earns 4.1 out of 5 stars. While older reviews are positive, a few more recent reviews mention the store feeling a bit empty. For example, a reviewer with the handle "M" wrote:

"Always loved Macy's, but I had not been in a while. I cannot speak for all Macy's stores, but this one in particular left me shocked. It is sad and empty and the quality of the products is not even close to what it used to be. Perhaps it’s the dying mall in which it is located or it may be a location that will soon be closing. I hope this store is an exception..."

About The Mall In Question: The 40-year-old Boynton Beach Mall went up for sale in 2023. Once a bustling mall, today it is mostly empty.

Al Ferris, leasing manager of The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, told The Palm Beach Post:

"When someone talks about a mall failing, the Boynton Beach Mall is the poster child for that. It's an old-fashioned mall with real estate leadership that took the cheap and easy way out. Instead of reinventing that property, they let the competition overwhelm them."

The mall has been reviewed over 5,000 times on Google reviews and receives 3.9 out of 5 stars. Many reviewers praise the food court but concede that the mall is not crowded.

A reviewer named Esteban wrote, in part:

"It’s really a shame the mall has so much potential and sits in a really good location. But it’s dilapidated and decrepit. The floors are filthy, the landscaping lacks basic care, many stores are closed, the food court doesn’t even have a lot of chairs to sit on, (and) the bathrooms are nasty…"

The Future Of The Mall And The Macy's: Macy's officials could not be reached for comment by the South Florida Business Journal for questions about the Macy's store's future.

However, the mall has been marked for sale as a mixed-use project that could have at least 1,700 apartments. Still, when contacted by the South Florida Business Journal, the spokesperson for the owner of the mall said:

"WPG, the owner of Boynton Beach Mall, is exploring options for the future of the mall. There is no definitive plan or timeline as of yet.”

The author is not affiliated with Macy's or the Boynton Beach Mall.

To the people who shop on Amazon, you did it! You are supposed to be so proud. Now, the old-fashioned people like us, who like stores, have fewer and fewer options.
