Florida Retro Eatery Freddy's Frozen Custard And Steakburgers Shut Down By State Inspection

Floridians who want to eat steakburgers in a retro environment have some choices, including Steak N Shake and Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers. However, a location of the latter - in Ocala - was recently temporarily shut down after a state inspection.

About Freddy's Frozen Custard And Steakburgers: The founder of this chain, Freddy, is a veteran who was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. The restaurant is run "Freddy's Way," and it serves steakburgers and other comfort foods made to order with frozen custards.

The restaurant in question, at 3558 SW College Road, has been reviewed over 2,600 times on Google reviews, where it earns 4.3 out of 5 stars.

Reviews that mentioned cleanliness were mixed. A reviewer named Bill wrote:

"One of my favorite hamburger restaurants of all time! Absolutely love the smash burgers and the shoestring fries! Must try Freddy’s sauce too. Their custard is also excellent. This location is excellent. The store is clean and the staff is friendly and helpful."

However, a reviewer named Mark wrote:

"This place could use a good clean up, some living wages, and a better manager! The wait was very long. Our food smashburger was overcooked and just not that tasty. The door to the patio was disgustingly dirty and the tables on the outside edge of the patio were moldy."

What Happened At Inspection?: According to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, an inspection occurred on September 16, 2024. At that time two violations were noted.

All violations related to roaches. A basic violation came due to the observation of dead roaches and a high-priority violation came for the observation of a dozen live roaches.

The restaurant was temporarily shut down on September 16th. However, at a follow-up on September 17, 2024, the restaurant "met inspection standards" and was free to reopen.

Please note that an inspection is one moment in time and not necessarily how a restaurant conducts itself every day.
