La Crosse Area Genealogical Society cleans up headstones at Oak Grove Cemetery

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- On Tuesday, the La Crosse Area Genealogical Society worked to clean up final resting places.

Every year the society cleans a different section of Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.

One team went around brushing off headstones, while others took photos of the stones and transcribed them to make the cemetery searchable online.

Bill O'Driscoll is the President of the La Crosse Area Genealogical Society. He says it's important to preserve family history.

"We're all genealogists and we all care about family history. I guess you'd call it this is a way of kind of genealogists giving back to people other than ourselves," said O'Driscoll.

The information they gather will be available online.

If you would like to take part in cleaning up headstones, the archives at the La Crosse Public Library has free kits that you can check out with all the materials needed.
