    Anti-Camping proposal fails J&A vote

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- On Tuesday, La Crosse's Judiciary and Administration Committee heard discussion on a proposal to restrict camping on city property.

The proposed ordinance would set a 12-hour time limit on all camping.

After 12 hours in one location, individuals would be required to move 500 feet or get a ticket.

Committee members listened to people on both sides of the issue, including city officials, police officers, and homeless advocates.

Mayor Mitch Reynolds spoke in support of the legislation, which he presented as a public health and safety necessity.

The committee voted not to approve the ordinance, with three votes against, two votes in favor, and one abstention.

    However, their decision is non-binding.

Next Thursday, the ordinance will go to Common Council, which has the final say on whether it becomes law.
