    ReNew the Block

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- Habitat for Humanity is reimagining part of La Crosse's north side with its 'ReNew the Block' program.

Saturday marked the start of the first phase to revamp the area surrounding Logan Middle School.

The program will be planting over 50 new trees, repairing homes, and establishing a food forest for community use.

The neighborhood suffers from the urban heat island effect, and tree planting will provide more shade for residents.

Kaitlyn Wiehe, the AmeriCorps Sustainability VISTA at Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region, emphasized the project's environmental impact.

"Neighborhood revitalization is really important especially as we prepare for the effects of climate change that are happening now.  It's really important that we adapt in order to mitigate the effects of climate change," said Wiehe.

Saturday's efforts focused on home repairs; going forward, the program will emphasize urban agriculture, stormwater mitigation, and community engagement.

The next volunteer opportunity is scheduled for August 10th. To get involved, sign up or donate on their website.
