LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- The 50th annual Mediterranean Festival kicked off this afternoon at the St. Elias Orthodox Church grounds.

The festival serves as a fundraiser for the church, which has been in La Crosse more than 100 years.

Food from a variety of different cultures was served that are reflected in the church.

One of the coordinators for the festival says the money raised will go directly back to the church.

"We're going to try to put a life in. We're also going to try to put a dome on top of the church, which is reflective of eastern Christianity," said Richard Markos.

Officials anticipated between 500 and 800 people would attend the festival. Folks also had the chance to enjoy live music, and a Bulgarian bagpipe band from Minneapolis.
