Ho Chunk Nation holds Back-to-School Bash in La Crosse

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- A Ho-Chunk Nation Back-to-School Bash helped provide for the needs of Native American students on Monday.

The event was held at Three Rivers House in La Crosse from 3 to 6 p.m.

To qualify, students had to be between the ages of 3 and 18 and have at least 1/4 Native American ancestry.

Eligible students received backpacks and school supplies, along with some traditional foods to snack on, including fry bread.

One of the organizers says a lot of hard work goes into the event, but it's all worth it to put a smile on the faces of kids in need.

"Honestly, seeing these kids' faces when they get new backpacks with Avenger --or no, UnderArmour--is probably worth all the time and effort, because it's just fantastic to see. We just want our kids to be happy," said Bethany Redbird, school-community relations director for the Ho Chunk Nation.

The Ho Chunk Nation Education Department and Youth Services Division hosted the Back-to-School Bash.
