UWL Murphy Library to expand Mississippi River and Driftless Area collection

LA CROSSE (WKBT) --- UWL'S Murphy Library will be expanding its Mississippi River and the Driftless Area collection through a new initiative.

The Driftless River initiative will aim to bring together materials related to the scientific, environmental, and cultural history of the Upper Mississippi and Driftless Area.

Those items include field journals, river maps, historical artifacts, and more

The Murphy Library already has an extensive collection of academic works documenting the unique makeup of the Driftless region.

A digital librarian says the collection holds historical and cultural importance for the driftless area.

"The driftless area at large, I mean there's an identity component to it. I think that's important when you start thinking about...the kind of culture, heritage aspect to it," said David Mindel, a digital collections librarian at UWL Murphy library.
