National Day of Prayer Returns for a 23rd year

Diane Perry, the city of LaFayette’s Assistant clerk, announced the 23rd Day of Prayer at the Monday meeting of the city council. Perry, the longtime organizer of the event, announced the 2024 event would be in August.

Perry said the first day of prayer was on August 6, 2001, in response to the attacks on September 11.

“On 9/11 the whole nation was changed because of what happened in America and New York and everywhere else,” Perry said.

The Day of Prayer will take place on August 2 at 6 p.m. on the East side of the courthouse square.

I thank you all for your support,” Pery said. “They did not find everyone in the Twin Towers…But we cannot forget what happened to America at the time and we have to continue to pray for our leaders.”

Council member David Ennis thanked Perry for spearheading the event over the years.

Private citizen, Randy Talley, gave public comment at both the city council meeting and the County Commission meeting earlier that night.

Talley spoke to the council about a dangerous crosswalk near the courthouse as well as an issue at the LaFayette City Cemetery.

According to Talley, there are multiple potholes at the cemetery, which he described as “embarrassing.” However, the main issue he had experienced was with floral arrangements.

“Flowers have been stolen from the graves from both cemeteries, from what I understand,” Talley said. “We have experienced this personally; on two different occasions we have sent floral arrays to services only to have them stolen on the next day.”

Talley asked that the side gates to the cemetery be locked and reopened on the day of services. He also requested the LaFayette Police Department patrol the cemetery daily.
