LaFayette council speeds up move-in process for new city hall

LaFayette’s city employees may soon be moving into their new city hall after the City Council made a motion to move forward with the ADA-compliance upgrades at the Monday council meeting.

The new city hall, located on South LaFayette Street in what was the old bank building, has been a frequent discussion at the council meetings for the past year. The city put out bids for renovations to the building so that it could house the city hall and police department.

The project has been on hold after a lengthy discussion about the bid amount that came through. Part of the urgency to get moved into the new building is due to the fact that the current city hall needs a roof replacement.

The ceiling at the old building leaks over the police station offices, according to Council member Tammie Williams.

At Monday’s meeting, the council approved a motion to move ahead with the ADA compliance so that the city employees can move into the building. Part of that motion included addressing the leaking roof.

The city has looked into making minor repairs internally. However, because of the extent of the damage, City Attorney Mac Tucker recommended that the city bid the repair out to a contractor. The council members and Mayor Kenneth Vines voted to approve the motion to bid out the roof repair for the old building and to move ahead with the ADA compliant repairs to the new one.
