Illinois Supreme Court upholds unconstitutionality of Democrats' law banning slating of candidates
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court on Friday upheld a lower court ruling that tossed out a law barring political parties from choosing candidates for the General Assembly when they had no one run in a primary. The court’s decision was not based on the merits of the case: Two justices recused themselves from deliberations, and the court was unable to get four votes needed to render a valid opinion. The law, which was approved by majority Democrats and Gov. J.B. Pritzker in May, stopped the long tradition of parties “slating” candidates. Designed to help Democrats in the November election, it effectively prevented Republicans from drafting candidates after no one appeared in the ballot in the March primary. Draftees were eligible as long as they collect the required number of petition signatures by a June 3 deadline.

Some businesses say they lost out as Chicagoans seemed to stay home during DNC
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Democratic National Convention brought thousands of delegates, volunteers, politicians, and delegates to Chicago—but some say Chicagoans themselves stayed home.So what effect did the DNC have on the busy business areas that are removed from the United Center and McCormick Place? The owners and staffers of some of those businesses said they were somewhat disappointed in how it all worked out. It's hard to know exactly how many local residents stayed home—or even left the area—to avoid convention crowds and traffic. But the fact that some businesses saw such slow sales is a sign."Really slow," said food...
2024 DNC – History doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme: The 2024 DNC crushes the demons of 1968 DNC
As Democrats gather in Chicago for their national convention, echoes of the 1968 Democratic National Convention linger. The 1968 convention, marked by political chaos, social upheaval, and violent clashes between anti-war protesters and police, casts a shadow over the current gathering. The parallels between then and now are striking, with unexpected political developments, such as an incumbent president bowing out and heightened tensions from international conflicts, adding to the sense of historical déjà vu. However, unlike the division of 1968, today’s Democratic Party shows a rare unity behind Vice President Kamala Harris following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
