A quartet of Southern Maryland Athletic Conference outdoor track and field teams, at least one from each of the three counties that comprise the region, were on hand at Calvert High School on Tuesday afternoon as the numerous athletes tuned up for the upcoming SMAC championships at St. Charles on May 7 and 9.

Tuesday afternoon offered male and female athletes alike from host Calvert, La Plata, Leonardtown and St. Charles high schools a chance to prep for the championships that the Spartans will host in two weeks. Conditions were ideal for peak performances on Tuesday and several athletes thrived on the track and in various field events.

La Plata senior Cameron Harrold continued to put the finishing touches on his solid final season with the Warriors. Harrold, who is versatile in various events, captured the boys’ high jump on Tuesday with a best of 5 feet, 10 inches. A Howard University commit, Harrold admits his goals for the postseason are well within reach.

“I am really hoping to jump 6 feet at SMAC, then 6-2 at regionals and 6-4 at states,” Harrold said. “I’m really hoping to place high at all three meets, but my focus now is on getting 6 feet and then going from there. It’s been a lot of fun being a part of this team for four years. I’ve learned a lot from my coaches and improved each year.”

Leonardtown was able to display its strength in the various distance events on Tuesday as Grant Pritchard captured the boys’ 1,600-meter run and teammate Leah Magda took the girls’ 1,600 (5:26.46) in a personal best clocking. Magda was also part of the Raiders’ 3,200 relay squad that junior Emily Maury anchored. Maury would also prevail easily in the girls 800-meter run.

In the boys’ events on Tuesday, La Plata recorded a trio of victories by defeating Leonardtown 87.5-48.5, Calvert 92-44 and St. Charles 108-29. Leonardtown edged Calvert 64-55 and downed St. Charles 83-45, while the Cavaliers avoided the sweep by topping St. Charles 67.5-50.5.

On the girls’ side, Leonardtown posted a trio of victories by defeating La Plata 80-57, St. Charles 89-46 and Calvert 95-36. La Plata downed St. Charles 96-38 and Calvert 106-20, while the Spartans avoided the sweep by topping the host Cavaliers 66-44.

Calvert senior Hayley Spicknall, who also competed for the Cavaliers’ cross country team in the fall then ran indoor track and swam during the winter, is seeking to put the finishing touches on her final season at Calvert before heading to Salisbury University this fall, finished fourth in both the girls’ 800 (2:34.4) and the 1,600 (5:44.1).
