SPRINGFIELD — The competition began about high noon. Two foes stood out 100 paces apart, their weapons at the ready. When the signal was given, they began to do battle. No, this was not a Wild West reenactment, and the combatants did not brandish Colt .45s. This was the annual Springfield Valley Volunteer Fire Company’s battle of the barrel. The competitors were firefighters and their weapons were hoses. Teams of firefighters from 9 area companies faced off in the bracket style competition. There was a men and women’s tournament.
