ERIE, Pa. - The Somerset Patriots were defeated by the Erie SeaWolves 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in their series finale at UPMC Park, with just four hits in the contest. RHP Zach Messinger (5 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K) took the loss in his 18th appearance (16th start) of the season. Over 13 outings since the start of May, Messinger has pitched to a 3.44 ERA over 68 IP with 70 K. All three runs, and three SeaWolves hits off Messinger came in the 4th.

ROMNEY — The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB) are thrilled to announce the launch of the Discovery P.O.I.N.T. initiative, an exceptional six-week mini-course program available to county students across the state of West Virginia. Dorothy E. Menser
Dorothy E. Menser, 100, of Somerset, died July 14, 2024 at The Patriot. Born June 30, 1924 in Lavansville, daughter of Albert Russell and Orpha Mae (Gross) Bruner. Preceded in death by parents; 1st husband Clayton Blubaugh, 2nd husband John Menser, son Blaine Blubaugh, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters. Survived by granddaughter Jennifer Horst and husband Michael; great granddaughters: Kimberly (Noah) Horst-Parker and Kathryn Horst; step son John D. (Jean) Menser; step daughter: Beverly Minick; 5 step grandchildren; and 13 step great grandchildren. Dorothy was a 1942 graduate of Somerset High School. She was a dietary aide at Maple Ridge Elementary School for 10 years and then at Somerset State Hospital for 19 years. Also, Dorothy was one of America’s “Rosie the Riveter’s” assembling U.S. Navy Corsair Fighters during World War II. Member of Friedens Lutheran Church and a former member of Lavansville Lutheran Church. She enjoyed refinishing antique furniture. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024 at Friedens Lutheran Church. Rev. John Barichivich officiating. Inurnment Lavansville Lutheran Cemetery. Somerset Slay captures softball titles
Contributed Photo – The Somerset Slay softball team has made a clean sweep of both the Minor Division regular season and playoff championships in the Lake Ontario Youth Baseball/Softball League. The Slay went 10-0 during the regular season and was seeded No. 1 for the playoffs where they defeated the Roy-Hart Queen Bees in the quarterfinals, the Lyndonville Orange in the semifinals and the Roy-Hart Rays 17-10 in the championship game on July 3rd. Woman allegedly stole from care-dependant victims
A Bedford woman is accused to taking financial advantage of two adult individuals who were in her care. Alicia Dawn Martin, 37, is facing two third-degree felony charges related to financial exploitation of a care-dependent person.

A tale of two nurses
In March 2011, my Aunt Mary (who raised me from the time I was 2 years old until I was 18 years old), spent the final days of her life in hospice care. She became a patient of Hospice of the Panhandle. Mary’s home was in Romney off of Jersey Mountain Road. It was late at night when she declined rather quickly. Several family members were at her son’s house where Mary was staying, but none had witnessed a loved one die. All personal care and medications were administered by me, a longtime licensed practical nurse.
