Jane E. Detwiler, age 97, a resident at Colonial Courtyard At Bedford, formerly of East Freedom, died Monday evening, July 1, 2024, at the home. She was born November 13, 1927, in Lewistown, the daughter of the late John F. and Vera I. (Gates) Eckman. She married Robert A. Detwiler, who preceded her in death on February 16, 1974.

Mary Ann Platter, 73, of Levels, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2023. Born Oct. 22, 1950, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Francis J. Emerick and Theresa F. (Barrett) Emerick. Besides her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Marvin D. Platter; a brother, Melvin R. Emerick; and a sister, Doris I. Emerick.

Vivian Kaye Strawn, 79, of Romney, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Kaye was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Lloyd Fowler and Dolly Mae Richards Fowler; a brother, Sonny Fowler; a sister, Loretta Davis; and two great-grandsons, Nolan Ross Rinker and Landon James Rinker.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Minor League Baseball has named Somerset Patriots OF Elijah Dunham the Eastern League Player of the Week for games played from July 1-7. Over the Patriots' six-game series vs. Reading, Dunham went 10-for-25 (.400) with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 R, and 6 XBH. Dunham began the series with a walk-off double on Monday and concluded the set with homers in back-to-back games, including a go-ahead grand slam on Friday.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Roger Whisner. Roger passed away Friday, June 25, at UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland. Roger grew up here, went to school here and had many childhood friends. He was one of the founders of Green Spring Community Park. Roger served on many committees and was a member of several organizations. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Hyndman man facing charges for alleged probation violations
A Hyndman man is facing 11 felony charges after his probation officer alerted state police that he was allegedly in possession of multiple firearms and controlled substances. James I. Kamauf, 46, was arraigned Monday by Magisterial District Judge Tonya M. Osman on 11 felony counts of possession of a firearm prohibited and one misdemeanor count of manufacturing a controlled substance.
Cecelia Mae Weller
Cecelia Mae Weller, 85, passed away on April 5, 2024, in Riverside, CA after previously residing in Hemet, CA for many years. Born on January 5, 1939, to Fred Arthur and Lillian Marie (Sullivan) Derencin. After graduating from Somerset High School in 1956, Cecelia married Ralph Edward Weller in 1957, and they welcomed their only child, son Timothy Lee, in 1958. The family moved to California in 1963. Cecelia was widowed by the loss of her beloved husband Ralph in 2013, and the family takes comfort in knowing that they are now reunited for eternity. A graveside service will be held at St. John’s Cemetery on July 13, 2024, at 10 a.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Stephen Zirkle of the Somerset Nazarene Church.

ROMNEY — Romney residents will soon be paying more for the water they use. How much more likely rests in the hands of the West Virginia Public Service Commission. At their Monday night meeting, Romney Town Council members unanimously adopted the first reading of an ordinance raising the rates residents pay for water.

LHP Brock Selvidge (5 IP, 5 R, 9 H, 1 BB, 3 K) took the loss in his 16th start of the season. Selvidge ranks among Eastern League leaders with 83 K (T-8th), 7 W (T-3rd), and 84.2 IP (T-6th).
