James Edward Ash
James Edward Ash, 83, of Lincoln Twp., died July 12, 2024 at his residence. Born July 17, 1940, in Jefferson Twp, he is the son of the late Charles and Evelyn (Burket) Ash. Also preceded in death by a daughter Tammie Arntz, 3 grandchildren, Emma Jo Gordon, Candice Marie Ash and Evelyn Marie Ash and one great granddaughter Posie Elizabeth Foy. Siblings, Ruth Peterson, Janet Walker, Betty St. Clair, Wilma Stahl and Donald Ash and son-in-law Earl Beeman. Survived by his wife Mary Esther (Faidley) Ash, children, James Edward Ash Jr., Tina Ash Forney and husband Terry, Jeff Ash and wife Linda and Carolyn Ash Beeman. Also 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Jim was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church and was a retired farmer where he raised and butchered beef and pigs. He also worked in the maintenance department at Somerset Hospital. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 Monday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 am Tuesday with Reverend Thomas Brown officiating. Internment in Casebeer Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Somerset Family Hospice. Freda Grace Aurndt, 93, Garrett, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 13, 2024 at Meadow View Nursing Center. Born September 24, 1930 in Garrett, daughter of Raymond and Sylvia (Kendall) Mankamyer. Preceded in death by parents, husband Charles, son-in-law Larry Hilliard, great granddaughter Kaylyn Deem, brothers Frederick, Donald, and Harvey Mankamyer, sisters Nancy Mankamyer and Judy Dunmeyer, brother-in-law Emerson Dunmeyer, and sister-in-law Judy Mankamyer. Survived by children: William (Sandra) Aurndt, Cynthia (Michael) Krepelka, and Angela (Brian) Dermer; grandchildren: Tesa (Fred) Deem, Trisha (Greg) Kaylor, Jolene (Jason) Stiffey, Jana Krepelka (Joe Glessner), Carrie (Kevin) Bittner, Weston Hilliard (McKenzie Glass), Faith (Owan) Kelly, and Wyatt Dermer (fiancée Samantha Ross); great grandchildren: Mason and Warren Stiffey and Waylon and Dawson Kelly; sister Rose (Ronald) Arnold; brothers: David, Dale (Nancy), Doyal (Ruthie), Clay (Mary Alice), and Lynn (Mary Ann) Mankamyer; sisters-in-law Joan and Janet Mankamyer; and numerous nieces and nephews. She attended Berlin Brothersvalley High School. Member of Beachdale Church of the Brethren where she was an active member and past President of the Women’s Fellowship group, taught Sunday school, and was a past church board member. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and taking care of her family. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. Shirley May Lease, 82, of Augusta, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at her home. Born on Feb. 24, 1942, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Evers G. George and Mary Edna (Lambert) George Smith. Shirley was a homemaker and loved to go camping.
Richardson, Escarra Go Yard As Patriots Fall To SeaWolves In Series Opener
The Somerset Patriots fell to the Erie SeaWolves 5-4 on Tuesday night in game one of a six-game series at UPMC Park in Erie, PA. RHP Zach Messinger (6 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 5 K) did not factor into a decision in his 17th outing (15th start) of the season. The Yankees No. 21 prospect ranks among the Eastern League leaders with 97 K (1st), 91 IP (1st), .217 AVG (7th), and 1.15 WHIP (6th). Messinger allowed more than 2 ER in an outing for the first time since 6/21 vs. ERI. He’s now allowed 10 ER over 10.2 IP in two starts vs. the Seawolves this season.
Patriots Notebook 7/9/24: Hitting The Road Before The All-Star Break
Bridgewater, New Jersey – After taking four-of-six ball games last week from Reading in a rare home-and-home series with the Fightin’ Phils, the Patriots are flying high, tied with Akron for the best mark in the Eastern League to open the second half of the season with a 9-3 mark after winning back-to-back series for the first time this season. The recent hot streak has brought the club’s overall mark to 41-40 on the season as they get ready to make the trek out to Erie where they will battle the SeaWolves before heading into the All-Star break.
Hurricanes hit their way past St. Michael, 9-8
In the Bedford Post 113 American Legion baseball team’s regular season finale on Tuesday, the Hurricanes had a good bit on the line. In a matchup against St, Michael, who topped the Hurricanes earlier this year, the winner would have the best opportunity to capture the regular season title and be the top seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Bedford Borough has released its waterline construction schedule for July 15-18. One crew will be working along Pitt Street between Bedford and Richard streets on July 15, on North Bedford Street on July 16, and on Pitt Street between Chamberlain Street and the fairgrounds on July 17-18. Parking will be restricted in designated areas, and traffic will be controlled by lights or flaggers. A second crew will be performing concrete restoration on the north side of Pitt Street between Juliana and Richard streets on July 15, on Pitt Street between Richard and Anderson streets on July 16, and on the south side of Pitt Street between Juliana and Richard streets on July 18. Parking will be restricted.
Bedford man faces three charges
A Bedford man allegedly strangled his wife and threatened to kill her over an argument after she woke up him. James Wade Diehl, 59, faces a second-degree felony charge of strangulation, a second-degree misdemeanor charge of simple assault, and a summary count of harassment, stemming from the alleged altercation the night of July 5 to the morning of July 6.
