Traffic delays expected at troubled Lacey area intersection starting Monday. Here’s why

Motorists should expect road work to cause traffic delays at a Lacey area intersection starting Monday, Thurston County staff warns.

The road work will affect Sleater-Kinney Road at 15th Avenue Northeast, which is up the street from North Thurston High School. The intersection has previously been the subject of concern for some local residents, especially as new development has been planned for the area.

A contractor will start installing a new signal at the intersection Monday, according to a county news release. Crews also plan to complete underground utility work and widen the intersection to include accessibility ramps, turn lanes and crosswalks.

Construction has been scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The first phase of the project will last about 4-6 weeks, the county’s news release says.

Travelers can expect flaggers to direct traffic during lane closures. Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead for traffic delays or consider alternate routes.

The county plans to install reader boards along Sleater-Kinney Road and 15th Avenue to warn the public about the road work.

People with questions about the project can contact Keevan Forbes-Kashani, Thurston County Public Works Traffic Senior Civil Engineer, at 360-870-2345 or keevan.forbes-kashani@co.thurston.wa.us.
