LADSON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Ladson man almost threw away a winning lottery ticket worth $200,000, state lottery officials said.

The lucky player told the South Carolina Education Lottery that he didn’t think he won anything on a $5 ticket he bought at a Speedway on Ladson Road.

He later picked up the ticket to throw away, but a family member looked it over. That’s when he discovered the big win.

His response: “Oh, wow,” lottery officials said.

While the man did not want to be identified, he told lottery officials that he wasn’t convinced he won until they verified the ticket and gave him a check.

He plans to invest the money.

Lottery officials said the odds of winning $200,000 in the Emerald Green game are 1 in 960,000. No more top prizes remain in the game.

The store that sold the winning ticket received a commission of $2,000.
