    Study names Colorado town among the best in the nation for families

    DENVER (KDVR) — Amid inflating costs of goods and high demand for affordable housing, American families are looking for places to live that are affordable but also have a sense of community and things to do.

    In a recent study, Fortune magazine ranked one Colorado city among the best in the U.S. when it comes to finding a place for a family to live.

    Here’s what the top 1% makes in Colorado: Study

    The study analyzed over 2,000 cities and towns across the country, each with some 20,000 residents. Fortune Well said it reviewed nearly 200 data categories across five main themes, including education, resources for aging adults, general wellness, financial health, and livability.

    Fortune Well focused this year’s list of the top 50 Best Places to Live for Families 2024 around the “sandwich generation,” meaning those who are raising children while also caring for aging parents. Fortune Well noted that multi-generational family living has become more popular.

    Many of the best cities were found to be edge cities

    Lafayette, Colorado was ranked as the No. 7 best city in the nation for families. Here is the top 10, to see the full list visit Fortune Magazine’s website :

    1. Silver Spring, Maryland
    2. Upper Merion, Pennsylvania
    3. Chantilly, Virginia
    4. Ann Arbor, Michigan
    5. Mason, Ohio
    6. Franklin, Tennessee
    7. Lafayette, Colorado
    8. Overland Park, Kansas
    9. Morristown, New Jersey
    10. Portsmouth, New Hampshire

    What makes Lafayette, Colorado so great for families?

    Some of the things that make Lafayette one of the best places for families to live in the nation are its location, geography, trails, entertainment and resources.

    Lafayette, which has a population of 30,699 according to the 2020 U.S. Census, is located between Denver and Boulder, two of the state’s most popular cities.

    The downtown area is populated with coffee shops, boutiques, breweries, art, museums and more.

    Fortune says Lafayette has nature activities that appeal to youngsters such as bike trails and parks, as well as 22 above-average nursing homes within 50 miles for the older members of the family.

    The local median household income in Lafayette is $112,914, according to the study, meanwhile, the statewide median household income (for a single person) was $77,331, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

    These mountain attractions are only accessible during the summer months

    Additionally, the area has a 90.42% high school graduation rate.

    Fortune Well also noted that the city has a good amount of places within walking distance, and bus stops for the things residents cannot walk to.

    No. 43: Cheyenne, Wyoming

    Cheyenne, Wyoming, about one hour and forty minutes north of Denver, also made the list coming in at No. 43.

    The study noted that Cheyenne has a rich history and “retains the charms of its Old Frontier days.”

    Similar to Lafayette, Cheyenne offers many outdoor activities with the Rocky Mountains accessible nearby.

    Beyond its charm and the many things to do there, the study notes that Cheyenne residents benefit from a lower-than-average cost of living as well as no state income tax.
