Barricades block the South Street ramp onto the Harrison Bride approach in Lafayette on Saturday, June 22, due to a train derailment. Four train cars derailed and hit the support structure to the Harrision Bridge. Bridge access will remain closed until at least 7:30 a.m., Sunday.

The Harrison Bridge that connects Lafayette and West Lafayette will remain closed until at least 7:30 a.m. on Sunday due to a train derailment in Lafayette along Canal Road that occurred early Saturday afternoon.

According to a 7:30 pm. Saturday the City of Lafayette press release, investigators are still at the scene of the accident that derailed four train cars shortly after noon. Those four cars made contact with bridge supports and safety personnel are investigating to see what damage may have occurred.

As the Exponent has reported earlier, two of the derailed train cars carry hazardous materials, but no leaks have been detected. The cause of the derailment has not yet been determined and there are no reports of any injuries.

Police ask that Lafayette residents avoid the Ninth and Fannon streets as well as Sixth and Salem streets areas.

In West Lafayette, eastbound Wiggins Street is closed at Salisbury Street.
