Prosecutors have charged Marquise Devonte McDowell, of Lafayette, in connection with a group shooting in May.

The incident occurred the afternoon of May 12, when McDowell and two friends allegedly opened fire at a gray Chrysler 300 with a blue kiddie pool on top of it in a parking lot at the Peter Mills access point off of Wildcat Creek in the area of 1633 Eisenhower Ct., according to a probable cause affidavit.

A witness reportedly told Lafayette police officers he saw three vehicles and a moped "suddenly," pull into the lot, and park next to him. The Chrysler pulled into the lot shortly after, upon which a group of males reportedly exited the vehicles parked in the lot and ran toward the Chrysler said the affidavit.

The witness said he saw a Black man allegedly begin shooting at the vehicle, and police later confirmed from witness reports that McDowell was reportedly the only Black man in the group running toward the Chrysler.

The driver of the Chrysler also identified McDowell as the man who shot at his vehicle, along with another man, the affidavit says. The two men allegedly shooting at the Chrysler reportedly fled the scene when a passenger of the Chrysler returned fire. Police later seized a firearm from the passenger of the Chrysler, the affidavit says.

The Chrysler reportedly drove into bushes when first fired upon, but turned quickly and drove away. Led to the scene of the alleged shooting later, officers reportedly discovered shell casings, a left-footed black and red Puma sandal, broken glass, and what appeared to be fresh blood in the middle of the road.

According to the affidavit, officers later spoke with McDowell at a local hospital after he had checked in with a gunshot wound to his leg. McDowell reportedly said he did not know who shot him.

McDowell faces 11 charges: 10 felonies and one misdemeanor.

Police were not immediately available to confirm the possibility of other arrests made in connection with the alleged shooting.

Online jail records show that McDowell was booked in the Tippecanoe County Jail Thursday, held on a $5,000 cash bond.
