    LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — “I’m 95-years-old and she’s 95. Velta is the oldest,” Velva stated.

“My daddy said, oh no, not another one,” Velta and Velva laughed.

The twins are part of a large family consisting of nine siblings. They all worked hard to make ends meet—that’s just how things were back in those days.

“We all worked together. We had very little education, but we made it.”

Their father devoted himself to his work at the Jefferson Island mine. Neither sister had children, but Velva broke the pattern, entering into a marriage that lasted for 54 years until her husband passed away.

Velva devoted 29 years of her life to working for a charity hospital.

She also received church recognition for her devotion and passion for giving and served numerous organizations, including the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver.

Velta also channeled the same drive to care for others.

“She babysat the children. The little bitty children. She did a good job.”

At one point, Velta left home to attend a school for blind students. But word has it that her mom wanted her home—home sweet home.

“She did not stay very long. I think she went there for four of five years.”

Velva expressed that if given the opportunity, she would return to sewing.

“My eyes still are not well enough. I still can’t complain,” Velva said.

Velta would be more than willing to care for children lovingly – maybe just one or two.

“I like to babysit,” Velta smiled.
