Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is a Super Bowl champion with two Pro Bowl selections with a career completion rate that rivals Joe Montana. While some fans and media don’t view Stafford as one of the best NFL quarterbacks in 2024, those closest to the game feel quite differently.

Mike Sando of The Athletic released his annual NFL quarterback tiers rankings, with executives and coaches from around the league offering input on starting signal-callers. NFL general managers and defensive coordinators both offer feedback on the quarterback and rank them into tiers.

    • Matthew Stafford stats ( Pro Football Reference ): 3,965 passing yards, 92.5 QB rating, 62.6% completion rate, 24-11 TD-INT, 7.6 yards per attempt

Stafford moved up six spots in this season’s NFL QB rankings by The Athletic, tied for the fourth-highest jump among quarterbacks with Jared Goff. The Rams’ signal-caller landed in Tier 2, sharing it with Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Aaron Rodgers, C.J. Stroud, Dak Prescott, Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, Kirk Cousins and Jordan Love. While it’s a massive tier of quarterbacks, those polled were especially high on Stafford.

“When people put their top 10 quarterbacks together, he is always eight or nine, but he is better than anyone thinks. So consistent, so strong, reads defenses so well, can do anything with his arm talent. He is the reason that team is so good”

Of those polled, there was consensus agreement that Stafford’s ability and poise in pure-pass situations is one of the best in the NFL. He’s so well-respected around the league that one anonymous defensive coordinator highlighted Stafford as one of the quarterbacks he doesn’t want to face with the football in his hands late in the game.

In fact, some in the league are so high on Stafford that they would put him in the Tier 1 of NFL quarterback rankings. It means putting him in the same class as Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.

“The guy delivers. He handles pure pass probably as well as anybody. He won a Super Bowl. He consistently brings his team back. I have no problem with a 1 on him.”

Stafford finished with a voting average of 1.6, which just narrowly kept him under the minimum threshold (1.5 average) for Tier 1. Between the feedback from anonymous executives and coaches paired with the praise Stafford has received from peers like Caleb Williams and C.J. Stroud , it’s clear those who know quarterbacks the best believe Stafford is one of the true elites in the NFL.
