Taylor Heinicke’s Intense Preparation for Chiefs Tilt

After being limited for a second straight day of Los Angeles Chargers practice, the possibility of Taylor Heinicke starting in the place of Justin Herbert has risen.

Heinicke took his first snaps as a Charger last Sunday when Herbert exited the game in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On 10 snaps over the course of two possessions, Heinicke threw two passes for 24 yards, picking up one first down and getting sacked three times.

Ahead of Thursday’s practice, Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman was asked how Heinicke is preparing for his first start in powder blue.

“He’s coming along really well.” Roman said, “He’s done a great job picking this stuff up quick, a really savvy guy. I mean he was burning the midnight oil. I mean he was his he was drinking truck-stop coffee to stay up to get caught up you know what I mean. So hats off to him real pro.”

Heinicke joined the team in late August via a trade after Easton Stick , Luis Perez, and Max Duggan struggled in the preseason. While those quarterbacks have played a good deal of meaningful football, Heinicke has far more experience, including as the starting quarterback for the Washington Football Team for much of 2021 and a part of 2022.

Roman was asked if those experiences were showing in his preparation.

“Taylor brings a wealth of experience and he knows how to handle himself. He’s got a really good feel for the room and how to interact with it. He’s got a great sense of that. He’s seen a lot of football, like you said and [he’s] been a lot of different places, done things a lot of different ways. So he’s been great in that regard.”
