2 Chargers Hit With Massive Fines

In a game that the Los Angeles Chargers were forced to play without star safety Derwin James because of a suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit in Week 3 and a continued disregard for NFL playing rules concerning player health and safety, two more Chargers were fined for illegal hits.

2 Chargers Fined For Helmet To Helmet Hits

The Los Angeles Chargers’ linebacker Denzel Perryman was fined $66,666 by the NFL for a play deemed unnecessary roughness and helmet-to-helmet contact against Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt. This is the largest fine of the 2024 season.

Hunt took a carry up the middle, Perryman lowered his head and made contact with Hunt’s helmet. Despite the potentially dangerous nature of the hit, no penalty flag was thrown during the play. This could be attributed to either the referees missing the violation or that the hit did not warrant a penalty.

Perryman was cited as a repeat offender, having previously been fined for similar infractions. Despite the fine, Perryman played a significant role in the Chargers’ Week 4 loss to the Chiefs, recording eight tackles and playing 71 percent of the defensive snaps.

Meanwhile, Mack was fined $22,511 for a pass rush up the middle against Creed Humphrey just before halftime. Mack was fined $16,883 last week as well for a roughing the passer penalty for a hit on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields.

The team has been flagged twice this season for unnecessary roughness.

The NFL levied fines to 12 players on Saturday for player safety violations and unsportsmanlike celebrations.
