There hasn’t been much that has gone right for the Los Angeles Rams , and that goes doubly for their defense. They are allowing the 4th most yards and points per game in the league. But there has been at least one bright spot.

Second-year interior defensive lineman, Kobie Turner is building an impressive follow-up to his Defensive Rookie of the Year worthy performance.

In his first year, he compiled 57 tackles, including nine sacks and eight tackles for loss. The big question was could he do the same, but without the benefit of playing next to the oft double-teamed Aaron Donald?

He is picking up right where he left off but added another element to his game. This has propelled him up the charts on a proprietary defensive stat called HAVOC rating, created by Field Vision Sports. By their newest calculations, Turner tops all interior defensive linemen, using this amalgamation of defensive stats. What exactly is HAVOC? Here is the short breakdown by Field Vision Sports: “Havoc Ratings were built by creating a model that calculates Individual player impact on a play-by-play basis, accounting for virtually every outcome a player is responsible for that creates (or degrades) value for their team. We did this by training a model to learn the value of individual player contributions (both positive and negative) based on years of NFL defensive play-by-play data. These contributions include everything we could measure, while excluding those that have a large element of randomness.”

What these numbers show is how much effect Turner is having on a play-by-play basis. Last year, it was evident that Turner had pass-rushing chops. But the extra layer he has added is in run defense. He leads the field by far in both, making his 15-point lead even more impressive.

While Turner has been good against the run, the rest of the team has not. The Rams’ defense is dead last in rushing yards per game, second to last in rushing success rate allowed, and, third to last in EPA per play

This has resulted in a spike in Turner’s playing time. Last season, he played on 61.5 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and only went over 80 percent once. Turner hasn’t dipped below 80 percent at all this season. He has played the second most of any interior defensive lineman this year and has played 84 percent of the Rams defensive snaps.
