The water was choppier than he anticipated, but Gadsden native John Brown said he completed the first half of his attempt to swim the length of Mobile Bay and looks forward to finishing it in October.

On Saturday, May 4, the 47-year-old who has spent the last three years treading the waters of Alabama’s lakes and rivers dove into Mobile Bay’s waves at Dauphin Island and swam roughly two miles to the perimeter of the shipping channel. He plans to return to Mobile Bay later this fall and finish the attempt by swimming from Fort Morgan to around Gasque.

Brown originally planned to swim nine miles from Mobile County to Fairhope, but decided to break the length into two swims on the southernmost part of the bay to accomplish the same distance.
