Orange Beach bridge toll plaza narrowing to single lanes beginning May 23

    2024-05-20

Traffic through the toll plaza for the Baldwin Beach Express Bridge will narrow to a single open lane for both directions once the state closes on its purchase on noon May 23.

Alabama Department of Transportation spokesperson James Gordon said the temporary plan will be implemented with traffic control devices and reduced speed limits until the five-lane toll plaza is demolished in the coming weeks.

A press release from ALDOT warned that with the onset of summer traffic in the area, motorists should expect congestion and exercise caution.

“ALDOT extends its gratitude to the community for their patience and understanding during this transition period,” the statement reads.

State officials announced last month that ALDOT purchased the bridge from the Baldwin County Bridge Company for $57 million in a deal that included an additional $3 million for road improvements for the city of Orange Beach.

The state is currently constructing its own bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway, which is expected to be finished by mid-2026. Baldwin Beach Express Bridge will be repurposed exclusively for northbound traffic, while the new bridge will carry southbound traffic.

It was moving steadily and no toll. They have to make space for deconstruction. They’ll have it moving much quicker soon, be thankful and patient.
