Lagniappe's roving reporter Byron Day was in New York City's Times Square Friday to see Fairhope native Paul Outlaw's 65-foot-long sculpture "Hot Dog in the City" in person.

Day interviewed some bystanders and even got to see the giant dog rise into the air at noon and fire a salvo of confetti.

Unofficially the world’s largest frank, the sculpture known as the “Hot Dog in the City” was birthed by Outlaw and his partner, Jen Catron, after a total of nine months spent planning and creating the mother of all hot dogs. The duo finally unwrapped the spectacle in Times Square in late April and it will remain there through mid-June.

Labeled as a “Trojan horse for deeper dialogue,” the sculpture — complete with a bun, weiner and a drizzle of mustard — intends to encourage onlookers to ponder the topics of consumption, class, capitalism and contemporary culture in America.

“On its surface, it’s very easy to comprehend and understand — it’s a giant hot dog,” Outlaw told Lagniappe in an earlier story. “Beyond that, the hot dog represents a lot of America and a lot of what we experience as Americans. It’s patriotic and everybody’s favorite Fourth of July food item. But it’s also got a bit of a tainted history.”
