The first day of school will be an eventful one for the kids of LaGrange. On Aug. 2, multiple city organizations are hosting a Back to School Bash and Movie on the Square from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m..

The event is free and open to the public. It is a partnership effort between the City of LaGrange, the Downtown LaGrange Development Authority, Troup County School System, the County Government and the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce.

There are also community organizations and businesses that are lending a hand. The Copper Carrot Bakery will be handing out mini cupcakes, while they last. The historical society and legacy museum will be doing a craft for the kids. The Jungle Bus will make a stop for kids to get some books. There will also be the Parks and Recreation department, school system and other organizations there to give information on children’s activities and resources.

Katie Van Schoor, the City’s Marketing and Communications Manager, said the aim for the back to school bash is centered around community.

“[Aug. 2] is the first day of school for the true County Public School System. There’s a new superintendent, we have a new mayor, and we just have a lot of excitement coming up for this next year… it’s just to get everybody excited about the school year,” said Van Schoor.

The new superintendent and mayor will say a few words at the event to kick things off.

“Many people are just joining together, just to have an event to celebrate our community, celebrate downtown LaGrange, and we’re just very excited.”

Music, free popcorn and treats will complete the party. The local musical duo, Kit and Char, will be performing. After walking around downtown and enjoying the square, families can set out their blankets for the movie, The Rise of Gru, at 9:00.

“All of our partners are wanting to step up and work together, working collaboratively to provide this service to our community,” Van Shoor said. “This is what Lagrange is all about; coming together as a community and celebrating…And just looking forward to starting [school] back on a great note.
