Sign up for The Brief, The Texas Tribune’s daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news. It’s become a familiar cycle: A powerful storm sweeps through a swath of Texas and takes the electric system down in its grip. Trees might bend and topple, crashing down onto a power pole. Sometimes the weight of ice pulls branches onto electric lines. Other times wind makes a wire spark, and that ember ignites a destructive blaze.

Frustration with power company mounts as Texans face weeklong outage after Hurricane Beryl
More than a week after Hurricane Beryl made landfall, utility crews across Houston are still working to restore power to the last 50,000 customers who have been without electricity through a stretch of hot weather. Some residents and politicians say they've had enough and their frustration is directed at CenterPoint Energy. William Brangham discussed more with Dug Begley of the Houston Chronicle.
Hurricane Beryl: Road to Recovery
People seeking answers and still seeking power after CenterPoint Energy’s delayed response. Houston and surrounding areas…we have a problem!. When Winter Storm Uri hit the state of Texas in February 2021, it exposed the many inadequacies we have in the state relative to the separate electricity grid with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Well over 3.5 million Texans were forced to be without power to warm their homes and the Texas Department of State Health Services declared that 246 was the official death toll because of Winter Storm Uri in Texas. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott asked the Republican-controlled Texas State Legislature to conduct investigations into what preparations and decisions were made by ERCOT in advance of Winter Storm Uri.
