In 2024, an average of one college or university has closed every week, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association, double the extinction rate of 2023. Though not a surprise – the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers published a report in October 2020 predicting a rise in college closures because of shrinking budgets and reduced enrollment – the worsening situation is leaving increasing numbers of students with unfinished degrees and difficult-to-discharge debt.
Pennsylvania man loses $90,000 over one year in gift card scam
LONGSWAMP TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM)– Pennsylvania State Police say a man fell victim to a gift card scam for a year, losing thousands of dollars. State Police in Reading say they were investigating a theft by deception when an Alburtis man in his 70s reported a possible scam on July 1. Troopers say the man reported losing approximately $90,000 in Apple gift cards over the course of a year.
Junior cadets graduate from Northampton Fire Department summer camp program
Bright and early on the hot, summer Saturday of July 13, 22 cadets aged 9 to 17 graduated from the week-long junior firefighter camp at the Northampton Fire Department. Marking its second annual program, the Northampton Fire 42 Summer Camp saw a major success in junior cadet turnout, which increased from 17 cadets in 2023 to 22 cadets in 2024.
