MILWAUKEE — Lakeside Lutheran’s baseball team lost to Wisconsin Lutheran 5-1 and beat Fox Valley Lutheran 8-3 at Saturday’s Lutheran Invitational Tournament held at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The Vikings (17-5) took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third inning, adding three insurance scores in the sixth.

“We trailed 2-1 in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third and no outs,” Lakeside baseball coach Jake Ziel said. “We came away empty. Wisco got three in the bottom to extend the lead. That was a big missed opportunity. To beat good teams, and Wisco is just that, you have to capitalize on those run-scoring opportunities.”

Phil Becraft allowed five runs (two earned) on 10 hits in six innings in the loss for Lakeside.

“Phil pitched phenomenal, holding a good offense to just a few earned runs,” Ziel said. “He has pitched some great games this year, and today he was solid and gave us a chance.”

The Warriors scored in five of their six at bats versus the Foxes (13-12).

Haydenn Schoenherr singled with one out in the second, then Billy Gibson doubled with one away. Owen Marty’s sacrifice fly made it 2-all before Cooper Brakmanis’ single gave Lakeside a 3-2 lead.

Aidan Berg hit a two-run shot to left field on a 2-1 pitch with two outs in the third. In the fourth, Gibson doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice by Brakmanis, followed by Logan Schwab’s two-run single in the sixth.

“Aidan’s home run was his fifth of the season,” Ziel said. “Billy, our freshman catcher, caught 13 innings today and hit a pair of doubles. He has been awesome for us defensively this year and for him to succeed at the plate today was a welcomed sight.”

Matt Krueger went the distance to earn the decision for the Warriors (16-5), allowing two earned runs on five hits.

“Matt has been very effective this entire season on the mound and today was no different,” Ziel said. “He shook off an early home run and limited damage the rest of the way.”
