LAKE MILLS — The Wisconsin State Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and other agencies responded to a fatal vehicle crash on I-94 Friday evening, Aug. 9.

The incident near the eastbound exit for WI-89 (N. Main Street in Lake Mills) took place at 7:19 p.m. Friday evening, according to the agencies. Traffic on I-94 was completely stopped in both directions, re-opening at 9:53 p.m.

The driver was declared deceased at the scene, while two passengers were transported via ambulance to area hospitals, and a fourth was taken via MedFlight air ambulance.

Jefferson County deputies were first to respond. A rollover that initiated in the left lane and ended in the median has initially been attributed to a mechanical failure with the vehicle. The final cause will be determined at the conclusion of a full investigation by Wisconsin State Patrol, which is tasked with incidents that take place on interstates.

The incident was not related to ongoing construction on a nearby area of the interstate. Traffic is down to one lane from 7 p.m.-6 a.m. in the westbound direction only. That project was completed Tuesday morning.
