STOUGHTON — Senior quarterback Drew Viney accounted for three touchdowns as Stoughton topped visiting Lakeside Lutheran 34-12 in Badger Small football to cap the regular season on Friday.

The Warriors (1-8, 0-5 in conference) got on the board first after forcing a fumble to open the game, with senior running back Issiah Sampson scoring on a seven-yard rush early in the first quarter.

“That was a regular veer play with good blocking,” Lakeside football coach Matt Doering said. “Issiah turned on the jets, got the corner and scored.”

The Vikings (7-2, 3-2) reeled off 20 unanswered points to close the first half.

“We struggled defensively out of the gates but then figured some things out,” Doering said. “The final score was a little deceiving. We had a chance to score right before the half but ran out of time.”

Viney connected with senior tight end Mason Richter on an 8-yard scoring pass midway through the first quarter before junior running back Logan Hedstrom added a 6-yard scoring run.

Viney’s 3-yard TD run early in the second quarter pushed Stoughton’s lead to 20-6.

Lakeside clawed within 20-12 early in the third quarter when senior Ben Krauklis found paydirt on a 6-yard rush.

“We generated a nice mix of plays to get down the field and on a regular option play, Ben took it in,” Doering said. “Ben also had a nice punt return late in the first half.”

Richter hauled in a 9-yard scoring pass late in the third quarter before Hedstrom capped the scoring with a 1-yard TD rush late in the fourth quarter.

Viney completed 14 of 21 passes for 155 yards with two touchdowns, Hedstrom carried it 21 times for 131 yards and Richter’s five receptions totaled 48 yards.

The Vikings tallied seven sacks and forced three turnovers — two on forced fumbles and another via interception.

    The Warriors were outgained, 354-158.

“We did a good job of holding their deep passing game in check,” Doering said. “The short and intermediate routes allowed them to pick up yards at key times.”

Lakeside is not part of the playoff field for the first time since 2016. The Warriors have won nine playoff games since 2017.

Facing seven consecutive Division 3 opponents took its toll on the D4 Warriors, who dealt with a scheduling gauntlet of facing four state-ranked teams and six teams which qualified for the postseason.

“We came out and competed in a quality conference all year,” Doering said. “These guys played a solid schedule and competed with each one of them. So many times, we were right there at halftime. We struggled in the second half when the depth of our opponents took over. I thought the kids came out and gave good effort all year.

“We’ll miss our 12 seniors. We had some struggles with injuries in that group and lost a number of them for chunks of time throughout the year. Those guys have been a great part of our program and we wish them God’s richest blessings in their futures.”
