Ava Schmidt scored two goals as Lake Mills beat Cambridge/Deerfield 7-2 in a Capitol Conference finale for both teams at CHS on Tuesday, May 21.

The L-Cats (16-2, 5-1 in conference) opened up a four-goal lead in the first half. Mckenna Klubertanz scored in the seventh minute, followed by Schmidt finding the back of the net on Emma Kitsembel’s assist in the 13th minute.

Mollie Cooper converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute before Greta Wiedenfeld’s unassisted goal in the 38th minute made it 4-0.

Schmidt (43rd minute), Sophia Guerrero (45th minute) and Addie Ninneman (63rd minute) scored in the second period for Lake Mills, which got two saves from keeper Milan Fullerton and extended its school-record win streak to 11 games.

“We wrapped up the conference season tonight with a solid win against CDU,” Lake Mills soccer coach Jeff Hegstrom said. “Both teams really came to play, and battled nicely throughout the game.

“Their counterattack really got our attention, but I’m proud of the efforts from our squad. We had some really nice moments that we’ll continue to look to build on in the coming days, as we get closer to the regular season finale, and into the postseason.”

For Cambridge/Deerfield, senior Ana Sarallo scored in the 38th minute. Senior Zoey Rank also scored in the 60th minute for United. Senior goalkeeper Kaila Buehler recorded seven saves in net.

The game also served as United’s “Mental Health Awareness Game” with Lake Mills where both schools work together to spread awareness about mental health.

Before the game, United players handed out stickers and tattoos to students at Cambridge’s and Deerfield’s elementary school.

United is 2-12 on the season and 1-6 in the Capitol Conference. Cambridge/Deerfield faces Edgewood on Thursday, May 30 in the first round of regionals at Edgewood High School.
