LAKE MILLS — “It’s not work, it’s fun.”

That’s what one employee at James J. Chocolate shop had to say about working there for the past several years.

After 35 years running a chocolate shop, Jim retired at the end of June. The announcement of his retirement was met with sadness from the Lake Mills and broader community. Comments flooded the Facebook announcement, with people sharing how much they would miss Jim and James J. Chocolate shop.

James J. Jarnigo said he has felt a lot of community support in Lake Mills.

“It’s been a good run,” Jim said.

He learned about the chocolate making business from his uncle. He started his chocolate shop in Madison in 1988. In 2006, he moved to Lake Mills. Since then, he has made many friends and connections.

Another employee said it was great to work at the chocolate shop and see how much everyone loved it there.

“It’s cool to see the joy on peoples faces when they get exactly what they wanted.”

They said regulars would frequently come in for the same items, excited for a holiday chocolate or just their favorite treat.

Following retirement, Jim is moving up north to be near his son. He said he’s excited.

Without Jim, James J. Chocolate shop will be closed until he can find a replacement. Jim is hoping to find someone to take over the shop, but if not, will close the chocolate shop permanently.
