Judge throws book at Lake Orion man convicted of home invasion, raping and beating woman

An Oakland County judge is sending a Lake Orion man to prison for 26-50 years in prison — far in excess of sentencing guidelines — for his "despicable" crimes and for repeatedly violating the judge's orders.

Sentencing guidelines called for a prison term for Adam Richards Williams of 171 months to 285 months, in other words, at least 14 years to a maximum of almost 24 years.

Williams, 35, was convicted by a jury after a six-day trial in Oakland Circuit Court in May. He was charged with first-degree home invasion, four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and aggravated domestic violence on Aug. 17.

The victim had ended a relationship with Williams when he broke into her home and raped and beat her, according to a news release from the office of Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. He allegedly beat the woman with his fists and threatened her with a baseball bat.

The jury convicted Williams on all charges. The crimes took place July 31 and Aug.1.

According to the news release, Judge Kwame Rowe sentenced Williams on Monday, and explained his reasoning for the long sentence, saying Williams' crimes were egregious and despicable. He also noted that Williams had repeatedly violated the judge's orders. According to the prosecutor's office and against the judge's orders, Williams attempted to contact the victim and two witnesses in the case.

"This was a horrific crime," said McDonald, in a statement.

She said she applauds Judge Rowe's decision, "which will keep our community safe from this dangerous predator and will hopefully provide the victim some peace, knowing this defendant will not be able to victimize her or others."

The case was handled by the chief of the special victims unit, Sarah Greene.
