The Lake Oswego Millennium Concert Band will try to show that storytelling is not beholden to words as it leads audiences on a narrative journey during a show next month.

The band will play its first matinee concert titled Storytelling Through Music at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3 in the Lakeridge High School Auditorium.

“We will show you how composers bring the stories of places, people, and events to life through melody, harmony, counterpoint, and rhythm,” a press release from the brand stated.

Band director Ken Peasley said that an audience member’s personal experience, the tact of the composer and the concert program helps guide onlookers through a story.

“And then your imagination takes over from there and the music ends up fitting what the title of the song is or what the composer is trying to convey,” Peasley said.

The 60-member band featuring a brass section, woodwinds, percussionists and more will perform the famed John Williams composition from the movie “Catch Me If You Can,” marching music composed by John Phillip Sousa and other songs that exemplify scenes like boating in the ocean with a whale looming, a peaceful Appalachian morning and more.

“We have a great variety of music. We always have something that’s going to please someone and almost always have a march in there. We have a diverse selection of music. People will really enjoy that,” Peasley said.

The band added the matinee show based on audience feedback and hopes to see more folks attend this concert.
