The city of Lake Oswego, which had to postpone its Martin Luther King Jr. celebration due to January’s storm, will host the belated celebration 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Lake Oswego Public Library and online.

The event will include a poetry reading from Emmett Wheatfall, musical performances by Alonzo Chadwick Sr. and The Godsistas, remarks from Mayor Joe Buck and Council President Massene Mboup and more.

“It’s an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, be inspired by his work and hopefully be inspired to participate in service opportunities in the community,” adult services manager Allison Arnold said.

Arnold said Wheatfall will read a poem about peace and nonviolence and said he has performed at the library before.

“He brings a lot of brovato to his performances. I think it will be a very rich (experience) to hear his poetry,” Arnold said.

She added that Chadwick Sr. moved everyone in the audience when he performed an acapella song at last year’s event and is excited to welcome The Godsistas, which includes the singer’s daughters and niece. Further, Arnold mentioned that Park Academy teacher Katharine Phelps will be the event’s emcee and that art produced by local youth will be displayed.
